COURSE DESCRIPTION

Cosmetology is a 1600-hour course which includes the study and practice of all aspects of the beautification and care of the hair, skin and nails. The course provides for both classroom instruction and supervised practice of job related skills such as hairdressing, hair cutting, coloring, manicuring and skin care services. The program also includes the study of relative subjects such as, bacteriology, anatomy, chemistry, health, etc.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES: GOALS

Upon completion of this course, the successful student, shall have demonstrated practical competencies necessary to pass the California State Licensing Examination, and apply for entry level positions as a salon technician, sales representative, nail technician, make-up artist, esthetician, or platform educator. Successful completion and  licensing can also be a “first step” towards other related occupations such as, cosmetology instructor, salon owner, 

or school owner.

 

PRACTICAL SKILLS TO BE DEVELOPED

With classroom laboratory and clinical practice, students will be able to:

  1. Properly use and handle all cosmetology related tools such as; scissors, razors, curling irons, low driers, dermal lights, combs and brushes, etc.

  2. Apply corrective and preventive skin care treatments, and apply make-up.

  3. Effectively use styling techniques which include, roller setting, thermal styling, pressing, finger waving, pin curls, etc.

  4. Perform chemical services such as, permanent waving, hair coloring, bleaching, chemical relaxing, etc.

  5. Perform haircutting services using scissors, razors, and thinning tools.

  6. Perform manicuring, pedicuring and artificial nail services.

  7. Apply scalp and hair treatments including the use of therapeutic message.

 

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION

Instruction will be presented in the form of lectures, demonstrations, practical visual aids, textbook, video viewing, assignments and independent library study. Field trips, and guest artist presentations are also used to enhance the learning experience. The first 360-hours of instruction, the freshman room, is designed to teach student the fundamentals of cosmetology, with emphasis on health, safety and client protection. Theory and practice are incorporated throughout the course. After each body of theory instruction, students are tested and given a grade.  Practical skills are also periodically evaluated, using specific grading criteria.

Cosmetology Chemistry (shall include the chemical composition and the purpose of cosmetic, nail, hair, and skin care preparations. Shall also include the elementary chemical make-up, chemical skin peels, physical and chemical changes of matter.)

Health and Safety/Hazardous Substances (Shall include training in chemical in health in establishments, material safety, data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals and preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and agencies, ergonomics, and communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B.)

Theory of Electricity in cosmetology (shall include the nature of electrical current, principles of operating electrical devices, and the various safety precautions used when operating electrical equipment.)

Disinfections and sanitation (shall include procedures to protect the health and safety of the consumer as well as the technician. The Ten required minimum operations shall entail performing all necessary functions for disinfecting instruments and equipment as specified in Section 979 and 980. Disinfection should be emphasized through-out the entire training period and must be performed before use of all instruments and equipment.)

(A) Manual (Shall include cleansing, scientific manipulations, packs, and masks.)

(B) Electric (Shall include the use of all electrical modalities, including dermal lights and electrical apparatus, for facials and skin care purposes .) However, machines capable of producing an electrical current shall not be used to stimulate so as to contract, or for the purpose of contracting, the muscles of the body or face.)

(C) Chemicals (Shall include chemical skin peels, packs, masks and scrubs. Training shall section 992 regarding skin peeling.)

Eyebrow Arching and Hair Removal (Shall include the use of wax, tweezers, electric or manual and depilatories for the removal of superfluous hair.)

Make-up (Shall skin analysis, complete and corrective make-up, lash and brow tinting and the application of false eyelashes.)

Manicuring and Pedicuring

ADDITIONAL TRAINING WILL BE GIVEN IN THE FOLLOWING SUBJECT MATTER: 

Salon Management communication skills that includes professional ethics, salesmanship, decorum, record keeping, client service record cards and preparing a resume, employment development, modeling, desk and reception.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION/DIPLOMA

Students shall complete the minimum required number of theory hours and practical operations as specified by the State of California, with a final evaluation score for practical and written test of 75% or better.  In addition to the state’s requirements, students at V.V.B.C must also complete the following course work:

  1. Complete all assignments from the standard theory and practical workbooks.

  2. View videos from required viewing video list.

  3. Prepare a photo portfolio of your finished work. (Minimum of 15 photos.)

  4. Prepare an organized notebook with subject headings and procedure sheets.

  5. Complete a typed functional resume and cover letter (class given for creating a resume.)

  6. Upon satisfactory completion of 1600 hours, the State requirements, and the Course Work listed above, the student shall receive VVBC’s certified diploma which certifies completion.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be 17 years of age or older and have completed the 10th grade. A cosmetology license will be granted by the State of California only after the student has successfully completed and graduated from the cosmetology course as described above and passed the licensing exam with an overall average of 75%.
